Green Power

Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative aims to provide our member-owners with safe, reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity

Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative has entered several long-term purchase power agreements (PPA’s) for energy generated by wind, solar, and landfill gas resources. We have these contracts, rather than owning the projects ourselves, because:

  • As a not-for-profit power supply cooperative, we are unable to take advantage of tax credits for these kinds of facilities that are available to for-profit entities
  • These PPAs help us provide this energy to our members at the lowest possible cost

We also sell renewable energy credits related to these purchases to our Members and to non-members.

Net Zero Carbon Goal

  • In 2021 Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative announced a goal to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, with an interim goal to reduce its carbon intensity by 50% from 2005 levels by 2030
  • Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative is the third generation and transmission cooperative in the country to set a net zero carbon goal

Solar

65 MW capacity

2019 & 2020

  • In 2019 and 2020 Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative and EDF Renewables North America entered a partnership to develop and build a portfolio of 12 distributed solar projects
  • These solar projects will generate approximately 65 megawatts (MW) of solar power across Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative member service territories
  • The projects are intended to bring local solar energy to Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative member communities while at the same time providing regional and energy diversification to Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative’s generation portfolio
  • Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative will purchase power from the projects at a fixed rate, providing energy cost security for its members
  • These projects have expected commercial operations dates of 2023 to 2024

Wind

210.5 MW capacity

2008

  • In 2008, Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative executed an agreement to buy 50% of the output of Klondike Wind Farm in Sherman County
  • The project began commercial production in December 2009, with the completion of  SLE wind turbines that can produce 100.5 MW’s

2013

  • Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative’s latest wind contract is with Stateline Wind Project in Umatilla County
  • Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative began buying over 110 MW of capacity, energy, and renewable energy credits from the project after it began commercial operations in January 2013

Landfill Energy

5.6 MW capacity

Laurelhurst G&T Cooperative currently buys the output of the Coffin Butte Landfill Gas Generation Project, located north of Corvallis, Oregon.

  • The project generates clean, renewable power from landfill gas, a natural by-product of the organic matter in the neighboring regional landfill, owned by Valley Landfills, Inc.
  • The Coffin Butte Landfill Gas Generation Project allows several electric cooperatives to offer customers “green power” as a way to support renewable resources.
